Social Media and Marketing Intern

Social Media & Marketing Internship

About Data Science Alliance (DSA)

As a 501(c)(3) registered nonprofit, our mission is to build a responsible data science and AI ecosystem, ensuring that data-driven decisions are made with integrity, transparency, and societal well-being at their core. We believe in harnessing the power of data for positive social impact while upholding ethical standards.

About the Role

Data Science Alliance (DSA) is seeking a creative and enthusiastic Social Media Intern(s) to help bring our mission to life through engaging content.

This is a hands-on role for someone who loves social media, enjoys making content, and is always paying attention to what's trending online. You'll spend your time brainstorming ideas, writing captions, filming content, editing Reels and TikToks, researching trends, and helping us experiment with new ways to engage our audience.

Whether you're creating a behind-the-scenes video at an event, jumping on a trending audio, interviewing a team member, or pitching an entirely new content series, you'll have the opportunity to put your creativity to work and see your ideas come to life.

You'll work closely with the Communications & Marketing Manager, but this isn't a role where you'll simply execute someone else's ideas. We're looking for someone who is excited to contribute concepts, test new approaches, and help shape DSA's social media presence.

This internship is perfect for aspiring content creators, social media managers, digital marketers, journalists, videographers, or anyone interested in building a portfolio of real-world content creation experience.

While this is an unpaid role, interns will receive academic credit (if applicable), portfolio-building opportunities, professional mentorship, and the chance to create content that reaches thousands of community members and industry professionals.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Brainstorm, pitch, film, and edit original content for Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and other social media platforms
  • Create short-form videos, reels, TikToks, behind-the-scenes content, interviews, event coverage, and other engaging social content
  • Write captions, social copy, and calls-to-action that align with DSA's voice and goals
  • Research social media trends, viral formats, trending audio, creator strategies, and platform updates to inspire new content ideas
  • Bring fresh creative concepts to weekly meetings and help develop new content series and campaigns
  • Edit videos using tools such as CapCut, Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Canva, or similar software
  • Capture content at DSA events and community programs
  • Collaborate with the Communications & Marketing Manager to refine ideas and optimize content performance
  • Assist with light content planning and scheduling
  • Analyze content performance and identify opportunities to improve engagement and reach
  • Participate in weekly team meetings and contribute creative input
  • Willing to assist with a variety of marketing operations and event support tasks, including occasional light physical work such as setting up materials, organizing supplies, or preparing for events.
  • Attend and provide support at least two DSA-hosted events during the internship term
  • Uphold DSA's core team values of Respect, Openness, Growth, and Agility in all interactions and contributions

Ideal Candidate:

  • Someone who is curious, proactive, and eager to learn. You enjoy figuring things out, embrace new challenges, and can quickly adapt as priorities evolve.
  • Loves creating content and spends time on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, or LinkedIn
  • Constantly notices trends, viral content formats, and new social media features
  • Comfortable filming, editing, and occasionally appearing on camera; Comfortable speaking in small to large in-person meetings or presenting at events
  • Enjoys storytelling and communicating ideas through video and social content
  • Has strong writing skills and can create engaging captions and social copy
  • Brings a creative mindset and isn't afraid to pitch new ideas
  • Wants hands-on experience growing a real nonprofit brand and building a professional content portfolio

Note: This unpaid internship is intended for educational or professional development purposes. Interns must be authorized to work in the U.S. and are responsible for coordinating academic credit with their institution if applicable.

At DSA, we're committed to growing and empowering an inclusive community within our company and industry. This is why we hire and cultivate diverse teams of the best and brightest from all backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives across our organization. Research shows that often, women and other minority groups only apply to open roles if they meet 100% of the listed criteria.

DSA encourages everyone—including women, people of color, individuals with disabilities, and those in the LGBTQIA+ community—to apply for our available positions, even if they don't necessarily check every box on the job description.
